About Our School

Rabbit Creek Preschool is a Parent Cooperative school in South Anchorage. Parents are essential to the success of our program. The program offers parents an opportunity to be involved in their child's education through participation in the classroom. Parents of three to four year olds are required to help four times during the school year. Parents of four to five year olds are required to help six or seven times during the school year. Don't let the word "required" scare you away. It is fun to spend a few hours at the preschool with your child. After your first turn, you will eagerly be looking for another chance to host your child's special day.

Our Teachers

Our teachers work hard to create a dynamic, evolving, yet comforting and cozy classroom atmosphere to encourage students to participate. Our school is built on the participation of our parents as well. We have one parent volunteer in the classroom every day. The teachers have an outline for the parents to follow so that they are immediately involved and comfortable in the classroom.

Lead Teacher: Debbie Brandt

Lead Teacher, Debbie Brandt, has first-hand knowledge of what a unique experience our preschool offers. Before she was a teacher here, she was a Rabbit Creek parent. She saw how the preschool gave a boost to her own children's love of learning and social confidence. This inspired Debbie to persue a career in education. Now, with an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Development from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, Debbie has come full circle. From the moment she stepped into our classroom, it was love at first sight for both Debbie and the children.

About me:

I was raised in upstate New York and went to college in Virginia where I received a BS in Outdoor Recreation. After many jobs with different aged children I realized that I really wanted to teach preschoolers. I went back to school in New York, received an AAS degree in Early Childhood Education and took my first teaching job in Point Hope, Alaska. I have worked with children for over 10 years from summer camps to classrooms, preschool to high school. I have been in preschool classrooms as an aid and teacher for 6 years and loved every minute of it. I’m currently working towards my AK teaching certificate at UAA. I am excited to be a part of the Rabbit Creek Community and I’m looking forward to a great school year!

Teaching philosophy

Throughout the years the most important thing I have learned about myself and teaching others is to have patience. We are not all robots that can be programmed in the same way. Individuals learn at different paces and through different experiences. I believe that young children should be given a hands-on learning environment that allows them to explore the world around them on their own with guidance from parents and teachers. When children are given these types of opportunities to learn, they begin to grow socially, emotionally and physically and everyone benefits from their success.
